Art

Our art curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become proficient in a range of artistic techniques. We aim to inspire creativity, self-expression and a love of art that will stay with our pupils throughout their lives.

The curriculum is sequenced to build on pupils' prior learning, ensuring progression in the development of practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge, as outlined in the NSEAD framework for art and design education. In the early years, the focus is on developing foundational skills such as fine motor control, mark-making and imaginative expression. This lays the groundwork for more advanced artistic techniques and conceptual understanding as pupils move through Key Stages 1 and 2.

Pupils learn about a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers, both historical and contemporary, from a variety of cultural backgrounds. They are taught to analyse, evaluate and make connections between different artistic movements and styles. This disciplinary knowledge helps pupils to develop a critical understanding of art and its role in society.

Throughout the curriculum, there is an emphasis on providing opportunities for pupils to generate ideas, to experiment with different media or with new techniques, take risks and learn from mistakes in a supportive environment. Lessons encourage dialogue, questioning and the exploration of meanings in art. Pupils are also given regular chances to create their own artworks using a wide range of 2D and 3D media.

By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will have developed the confidence and competence to express their ideas and experiences through art. They will have a secure understanding of how art has evolved over time and the ability to critically engage with creative works, as outlined in the NSEAD framework. Most importantly, they will have a lasting appreciation for the transformative power of art.
