Design Technology

Our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is centred around the Design and Technology Association's 'Projects on a Page' scheme. This comprehensive framework ensures that our pupils develop the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to become confident and capable designers, makers and evaluators.

The curriculum is structured around the key areas of food technology, textiles, structures, mechanisms and electrical systems. Pupils progress through a series of projects that build upon their prior learning, allowing them to deepen their disciplinary knowledge and practical abilities.

In the early years, the focus is on developing fundamental skills such as cutting, joining, assembling and exploring different materials. This lays the groundwork for more complex DT challenges in Key Stages 1 and 2, where pupils learn to 'generate ideas', 'make' prototypes, 'evaluate' their designs and apply their 'knowledge' of materials, tools and techniques.

Pupils are taught to think critically about the design process, considering the needs of the user, the function of their product and the aesthetic qualities. They are encouraged to explore and experiment, taking calculated risks and learning from mistakes. This approach nurtures creativity, problem-solving skills and resilience.

Throughout the DT curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on safety, with pupils receiving explicit instruction on the correct use of tools and equipment. They also learn about the importance of sustainability, considering the environmental impact of the materials and manufacturing processes they employ.

By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will have developed a comprehensive understanding of the design and making process. They will be able to independently identify design problems, research and generate innovative solutions, create high-quality prototypes, and critically evaluate their work. Most importantly, they will have the confidence and competence to apply their DT knowledge and skills to real-world challenges, both in and beyond the classroom.
