Funtington Primary School

Geography

In designing our Geography curriculum, we have taken inspiration from the Oak National curriculum designed in collaboration with the Geographical Association. The curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make sense of the world around them. We aim to foster an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of our planet, as well as the processes that shape it. Most importantly, we have given careful thought to ensuring the children have access to the rich learning opportunities available in our unique coastal and countryside location through studying our local area, including the South Downs National Park and Chichester Harbour AONB.

Throughout their time at Funtington, pupils will have opportunities to:

  • Develop a secure knowledge of places, both local and global, and the physical and human features that characterise them.
  • Understand the key geographical concepts, such as location, place, space, scale, interdependence, and physical and human processes. These concepts are woven throughout the curriculum to provide a coherent framework for learning.
  • Acquire and apply a range of geographical skills, including map reading, data collection and analysis. These skills are explicitly planned for and progressively developed.
  • Engage in meaningful fieldwork, both in the local area and beyond, to collect first-hand data and deepen their understanding of geographical phenomena.
  • Explore the relationship between people and their environments, and how this shapes the world in which we live. This includes investigating global issues, such as climate change and sustainability.
  • Develop a sense of place, belonging and stewardship, encouraging pupils to value and care for their local and global environments.

By following the GA's guidance, we ensure that our geography curriculum is broad, ambitious and relevant to the lives of our pupils. As pupils progress through the school, the geography curriculum is carefully sequenced to build upon prior learning and deepen their understanding. This ensures a coherent and progressive learning journey, with clear links between key stages.

Through the implementation of this curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of geography and a deep curiosity about the world.
