Music

We have adopted the Charanga Music Scheme to deliver a high-quality, progressive music curriculum that engages and inspires our pupils.

The Charanga scheme provides a structured, yet flexible, framework that allows us to develop pupils' musical knowledge, skills and understanding across the key areas of performing, composing, listening and appraising.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, the focus is on developing children's foundational musical skills through singing, playing instruments, and exploring the different elements of music, such as pitch, rhythm and tempo. This lays the groundwork for more advanced musical learning in Key Stages 1 and 2.

As pupils progress through the school, the Charanga scheme ensures that they have regular opportunities to:

  • Perform music, both individually and as part of an ensemble, using their voices and a variety of instruments. This helps to build confidence, technical skills and expressive capabilities.
  • Compose their own pieces, experimenting with musical elements and structures. This nurtures their creativity and understanding of how music is constructed.
  • Listen to and appraise a diverse range of musical genres, styles and traditions. This broadens their musical horizons and develops their critical listening skills.
  • Learn about the history and cultural context of music, enabling them to appreciate the rich heritage and evolution of this art form.

Throughout the music curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. Pupils are encouraged to actively engage with music, whether that's through singing, playing, improvising or analysing. This kinaesthetic approach helps to cement their understanding and foster a genuine love of music.

The Charanga scheme also provides opportunities for cross-curricular links, allowing pupils to respond creatively to learning in other subject areas. This holistic approach helps to deepen their understanding and demonstrate the relevance of music in the wider world.

By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will have developed a solid foundation in musical knowledge and skills. They will be able to read and perform from staff notation, compose their own pieces, and critically evaluate a range of musical styles and genres. Most importantly, they will have the confidence and enthusiasm to continue their musical journey, both in and out of the classroom.
