Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education
PSHCE is an opportunity to give every child an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. This includes helping children deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change, as well building a solid foundation to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead. Children will then be equipped to face a world full of uncertainty, with hope.
At Funtington Primary School, PSHCE is highly valued and a bespoke, spiral curriculum has been developed, which not only fulfils the statutory RSHE requirements but also meets the unique needs of our school community.
The aims of our PSHCE curriculum are:
- To promote children’s personal development including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
- To develop children’s understanding of healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships.
- To promote positive play and learning behaviours for all children.
- For all children to understand the physical and emotional developments that occur as they grow up and gain the tools and self-regulation strategies to be able to navigate their changing emotions.
- For children to know how and where to seek help and support both inside and outside of the school community.
- To develop children’s character including promoting resilience, confidence, honesty, empathy and self-esteem.
- To enable children to make informed choices about their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
- To develop children’s critical thinking skills including problem solving, informed risk taking and communication skills and the importance of their own voice.
- To develop children’s financial capabilities to equip them to be able to save money, budget and make informed financial decisions.
- For children to know how to keep themselves safe in a wide range of online and real-life scenarios.
- To prepare children to be active, responsible family members and citizens who can positively contribute to life in Britain.
- To promote the Britishness values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of others.
- To create a safe space for children to explore and ask questions about sensitive issues surrounding their own development and the challenges of the modern world.
At Funtington, our PSHCE curriculum is delivered through regular designated PSHCE & RSE lessons, assemblies, cross curricular links, residential visits, school trips, Together We Achieve Award, worry boxes, circle time, class council, school council, whole school events, house team events, visits from outside agencies and through the teaching of the Funtington Footprints. Our PSHCE is both proactive and reactive – proactive through the teaching of the curriculum as laid out on our curriculum maps and reactive as staff support children to tackle scenarios ‘in the moment.’
Our PSHCE curriculum draws on guidance from PSHE Association, as well as other high quality, age-appropriate resources. We work closely with parents and carers, outside agencies and the local community to ensure our curriculum meets the needs of our pupils.
