Funtington Primary School

Physical Education

At Funtington Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is a vital component of our holistic educational approach. Our PE curriculum aims to inspire and empower pupils to lead healthy, active lives while developing essential skills, fostering a love for physical activity and making children physically literate. We are committed to providing a broad, balanced, and ambitious PE curriculum that aligns with our school’s vision of nurturing independent learners who respect themselves and others.

Our PE curriculum is designed in accordance with the National Curriculum and is enhanced by the iPEP (Interactive Physical Education Platform). This platform supports our commitment to delivering high-quality PE by providing structured resources, assessment tools, and professional development for our staff.

Key Components of Our PE Curriculum:

Broad and Balanced Curriculum:

We ensure that all pupils engage in a wide range of physical activities, including team sports, individual sports, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor education.

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and those eligible for Pupil Premium (PP), ensuring inclusivity and access to high-quality PE experiences.

Focus on Progression:

Using iPEP, we articulate clear progression pathways in PE, allowing pupils to build on their skills year on year. This structured approach helps pupils understand what it means to "get better" at PE and encourages a growth mindset.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyles:

Our curriculum (closely linked with the PSHCE curriculum) emphasises the importance of physical health, mental well-being, and healthy eating. Through practical lessons and discussions, pupils learn about the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle and making informed choices regarding their health.

We provide ample opportunities for pupils to be active during the school day, including extracurricular activities that promote physical engagement and teamwork. We are also about to embark on the implementation of OPAL to further enhance playtimes.

High Expectations and Inclusivity:

We foster a climate of high expectations where every pupil is encouraged to strive for their best. Our curriculum is designed to be challenging yet achievable, allowing pupils to experience success and develop confidence in their abilities.

Activities are selected to ensure that all pupils can participate meaningfully, with adaptations made for those with specific needs to ensure inclusivity.

Collaboration and Community:

We believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration, both in sports and within the school community. Our PE curriculum encourages strong friendships and mutual respect among pupils, fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork.

We engage with local sports clubs and community organisations to provide pupils with opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom and into the wider community. Due to our curriculum ensuring each child is taught gymnastics, dance, games and athletics more than once in each key stage, we are able to provide flexibility with enrichment opportunities offered by local clubs.

Through our PE curriculum, supported by iPEP, we aim to equip our pupils with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead healthy, active lives. We are dedicated to nurturing a love for physical activity that will last a lifetime, ensuring that every pupil at Funtington Primary School feels valued, respected, and empowered to achieve their best.
